Travelling At Night Sixteen skills, no combat tree

Memories and Signs feed the web that opens Antibes

Skills Guide

Travelling At Night asks you to BUILD a character from sixteen very different skills. Weather Factory’s storefront lines are the best on-ramp: Dignity is essential for physicians who need to be taken seriously; Spivvery is the only way to ensure a hot meal in a cold world; any writer will tell you that Sophistication is useful, somehow; and everyone knows Skolekosophy is the study of things that should not be studied. This page turns those punchlines into planning language for the Antibes demo and beyond.

How skills grow

You FIND Memories and Signs as you roam ruins or glean them from conversations. Spend them to grow Skills and Passions along lines that run shining into the dark. Skill checks generate a difficulty threshold for RNG rolls based on environment, NPC attitudes, and your accrued points. You can sacrifice skill experience for a short-term roll bonus—powerful in a crisis, costly if spammed. Companions such as Vincent can aid rolls once recruited. High Dread silently raises thresholds, so a “high skill” on paper can still fail when doom climbs.

Social and institutional skills

Dignity projects authority and respectability. Physicians lean on it inside Sanitarium Aujourd’hui when dealing with Dr Aubiere, Mathis, or guests who sniff at carnival occultists. Respectable outfits often rhyme with Dignity checks.

Charm opens people who respond to warmth, wit, or presence. Café circuits, booksellers, and many Antibes side conversations reward Charm—but relentless social completionism also feeds Trace. Charm is not free.

Sophistication is the Writer’s wink: cultural fluency, phrasing, and reading rooms that reward taste. Pair with Librairie des Heures visits and Footnote expansions that prefer literary interpretations.

Spivvery keeps Spencer fed and moving through black markets, favours, and unseemly logistics. In a cold, war-torn town it is survival literacy, not a dump-stat joke.

Occult and liminal skills

Skolekosophy studies what should not be studied. Exorcist and Conjurer fantasies love it; Physician Curiosity runs can medicalise it. Use it when diagnoses turn cosmic or when church work needs unclean scholarship.

Nyctodromy concerns night paths, liminal travel, and moving when ordinary maps fail. The full game’s night journeys will reward it harder; the demo still uses it for strange access and occult framing.

Bosk taps green, growing, and wild forces—handy when Antibes greenery (and characters like Rodia) hints that vegetation is not merely scenery.

Other skills in the sixteen-skill web fill gaps between polite society and Mansus-adjacent weirdness. You do not need to maximise all sixteen in the Introduction chapter. Pick a primary trio that matches Career and Passion, keep a flexible fourth for emergencies, and let Memories decide the rest.

Choosing priorities for Antibes

For a first clear, prioritise one institutional skill (Dignity or Charm), one survival skill (Spivvery), and one occult skill (Skolekosophy, Nyctodromy, or Bosk) so you can talk, eat, and investigate. Writer starters may swap Spivvery for Sophistication if café and bookstore routes dominate. Exorcist starters often lock Skolekosophy early. See Skill priority for ranked advice and Starter builds for named packages.

Skills versus Passions versus Careers

Career is the thesis; Passion is the motive; Skills are the verbs. A Compassion Physician still fails without Dignity. An Appetite Conjurer still needs Spivvery when spectacle does not pay for lunch. Do not dump Passions to chase raw skill points, and do not ignore Footnotes that flavour how those points feel.

Checks, failure, and temporary spends

Failed checks usually redirect story rather than ending the run. Softlocks are uncommon in polished demo reports, but quest-log polish continues. If a check is critical—Vincent recruitment, a craft gate, a Nenah lead—consider a temporary experience spend, a companion assist, an outfit swap, or waiting until Dread cools. Spam spends and you will arrive in later scenes undergrown.

Crafting and skills

Crafting ties skill, item, and place. A Rite of the Ascending Sun for Dread management, a Midnight Mark for dream-taint, and holy-aspect work at St Reparata all expect the right skill investment. Plan crafting goals alongside dialogue goals so your Memories are not all spent on talk trees.

Tracking a plan

Use the Build Planner to note Career, Passion, and three priority skills before a second run. Cross-link with How to play for the loop and Complete demo for checklist coverage of skill literacy.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers drawn from the demo and official notes.

How many skills are there?

Sixteen. You will not max them all in the Antibes Introduction; prioritise a coherent trio.

Can I respec skills?

Treat growth as mostly forward. Replay the demo to test alternate priorities rather than expecting a full respec button.

Does Dread affect all skills?

High Dread raises check difficulties broadly, so every skill feels worse until you manage pressure.

Which skill helps recruiting Vincent?

Sanitarium social and Dignity/Charm-adjacent checks help, but story choices and Trace matter as much as raw ranks.
