Travelling At Night Dread and Trace

Two meters that replace a health bar in a combat-free CRPG

Dread and Trace

Dread and Trace are Travelling At Night’s signature pressure systems. You are not watching HP; you are watching existential doom and institutional attention. Together they explain why skilled Spencer still fails checks and why greeting every NPC can become a problem.

Dread

Dread tracks creeping doom. As it crosses thresholds, skill-check difficulties rise. Environmental horror—void tears, Worms memory bleed, amber/leaf plagues in the wider lore—feeds the fantasy even when a scene seems polite. Management tactics live in Manage Dread: quieter scenes, careful Footnotes, fewer desperate XP spends, outfit discipline, and rites such as Ascending Sun style crafts.

Trace

Trace tracks how easily authorities follow you. High Trace escalates toward hunted/Pursued states. Demo players have reached Pursued through energetic socialising alone. Trace is the tax on Charm completionism. Spivvery, night-leaning routes (Nyctodromy), selective silence, and smarter timing are counterplay. Léon, as a devoted servant of the State, thematically reminds you that attention is diegetic.

Interactions with other systems

Crafting in public while notorious may be unwise. Companions help rolls but do not erase meters. Ambition/Appetite Passions flirt with both spikes; Compassion climbs slower. Career does not immunise you—Physicians can still be Pursued. Outfits that scream spectacle accelerate Trace; traumatic Footnotes accelerate Dread.

Reading the UI

Glance after major conversations, failed checks, and flashy occult moments. If Dread just crossed a tier, change the next ten minutes of plan. If Trace climbs, leave the café circuit for church or solitary exploration. Controls habits: Controls.

Design reading

These meters enact Weather Factory’s “worse things than death” line. You can “die” socially, spiritually, or bureaucratically without a fight. Learn them early in How to play, then stress-test on a Conjurer second run from the Career tier list.

Demo literacy goal

Consciously reduce Dread once and consciously avoid a Trace spiral once. Tick both on Complete demo. If you only reload when checks fail without reading meters, you have not learned the game.

Full-game outlook

Faction play among Incorporates and Ministries will weaponise attention and doom at larger scales. Antibes is the classroom. Related: Outfits, Crafting, Recruit Vincent.

Pursued literacy

If you become Pursued through socialising alone, congratulations: you learned Trace without a chase cutscene. Cool down in quieter landmarks, reduce spectacle kits, and stop completing every Charm option. If Dread and Trace are both high, stabilise Dread first so the Trace recovery checks are possible. Dual spikes are how Introduction runs spiral.

Meter journaling

After each session write one line: “Dread felt ___ because ___; Trace felt ___ because ___.” That journal trains detection faster than any abstract meter essay. Pair with Manage Dread actionable steps.

Worked meter stories

Story 1: Writer Charm binge → Trace spike → Pursued feeling → café exile to church → recovery.
Story 2: Conjurer Footnote trauma + failed craft → Dread threshold → every check cursed → Ascending-Sun rite → resumed hunt.
Story 3: Physician ignores both meters → random failures → blames Career → rereads this page.

Memorise stories, not only definitions. Then write your own fourth story after Antibes.

Dual-meter emergency plan

If both meters are hot: (1) stop café completionism, (2) leave spectacle kits, (3) craft or seek quiet for Dread, (4) only then attempt Trace-sensitive talks, (5) bring Vincent to the first recovery check. Reverse order fails often because Trace recovery still needs workable difficulties. Drill this plan once on purpose during a messy Conjurer hour so it exists under stress. Meters are the boss fights; treat them with boss-fight seriousness even though nobody draws a sword. Glance twice; act once. Meters reward attention more than bravado. Make the double-glance a ritual after every major sanitarium conversation.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers drawn from the demo and official notes.

Which meter matters more?

Both. Dread taxes checks globally; Trace changes how the world hunts you.

Is Trace like a wanted level?

Spiritually similar as attention; tonally occult Cold War institutions, not star ratings.

Can I reset meters completely?

You manage and reduce pressure through behaviour and tools—not a full combat heal button.

Do meters persist into the full game?

Expect the same verbs to scale into later regions and faction play.
