Travelling At Night Footnotes

An interactive codex that asks who Spencer is becoming

Footnotes System

Footnotes are Travelling At Night’s hybrid answer to the traditional CRPG codex. Inspired by Book of Hours energy, they let you make choices about interpretations of History or personal preferences—like a personality quiz that awards flavoured experience. When Memories activate, Footnotes invite agency instead of dumping unread lore.

Why they matter

Antibes is word-dense. Without Footnotes, Secret Histories mystique either overwhelms or gets skipped. With Footnotes, you participate: Sorrow versus Whimsy readings, Curiosity diagnoses, Appetite reframes. Growth from Footnotes reinforces Passions and deepens Skills indirectly through understanding.

How to play them well

  1. When a Footnote appears, read fully before clicking.
  2. On a first clear, prefer expansions that match your primary Passion.
  3. Watch Dread—trauma expansions can spike doom; see Manage Dread.
  4. On replays, pick friction options to learn branches.
  5. Note Nenah-related Footnotes for the search guide.
  6. Treat Footnotes as core, not optional DLC text.

Build synergy

Writer fantasies revel here—Sophistication and Melancholy love annotated selves. Exorcist/Sorrow uses Footnotes as confession. Physician/Curiosity medicalises Memory. Conjurer/Appetite may reinterpret Memory as hunger. Align choices with starter builds so sheet and story rhyme.

Demo practice goal

Expand at least two Footnotes before finishing the Introduction—part of Complete demo. If you only chase map markers, you miss half the thesis. Voice acting coverage may still be incomplete in places; read carefully regardless.

Lore caution

Footnotes can spoil your own emotional surprises more than plot maps. Still, newcomers should embrace them; denser lore is friendlier when interactive. Pair with Lore primer only after you have tasted in-game Footnotes.

Relation to other systems

Crafting may reference understandings unlocked through Footnotes. Outfits will not replace interpretive growth. Trace rarely cares about private Footnotes—the danger is Dread and self-image. Continue investigation themes on Find Nenah.

Full-game outlook

As locations multiply, Footnotes will juggle specific setting detail against numinous Secret Histories intrigue—the wrangling weapon AK described in developer posts. Practice decisive readings now.

Interpretation hygiene

Do not click the first option habitually. Read rival interpretations as Passion tests. On Compassion runs, notice when a cruel reading is still informative—then decide whether information is worth the self you become. On Appetite runs, notice when restraint Footnotes unlock different crafts later. Footnotes are build play.

Density management

If word fatigue hits, finish the current Footnote properly, then take a café break in-world or a session break out-of-world. Skipping mid-Footnote teaches nothing and wastes the Memory activation. Two thoughtful expansions beat ten skims—exactly why the complete-demo checklist asks for two.

Footnote and Nenah crosstalk

Some expansions sharpen name-memory and duty; others bury pain under jokes. Choose knowingly. Log Nenah-relevant Footnotes in your planner with one-word Passion tags. That tag cloud becomes a better search map than unmarked rumour lists. Combine with evidence classes from Find Nenah.

Avoiding codex shame

You will not finish every Footnote on run one. Shame skips create worse ignorance than partial coverage. Two deep expansions per run meet the demo bar; mastery is optional and infinite.

Footnote session recipe

Activate Memory → read all interpretations → pick for Passion coherence → note Dread risk → accept growth → return to map with one new question. Repeat twice per run minimum. If a Footnote offers History versus personal preference frames, remember Weather Factory built that tension on purpose: specific lore versus numinous myth. Choosing is playing. Skipping is leaving XP and identity on the table. Writers should love this system; everyone else should respect it. Close every Footnote you open. Partial clicks teach nothing and waste the Memory spark that invited you in. If fatigue hits mid-choice, pause the game rather than picking blindly—Passion coherence deserves a sober click.
